"If her eyes, those eyes that held the pictures,
and knew the sights- if those eyes of hers were different...
beautiful, she herself would be different."
Pecola:
Pecola Breedlove is the protagonist in The Bluest Eye. In the beginning of the book, it is told that she is preganant with ehr father's baby. This sets the confusion of how she got pregnant and makes the reader wonder what happened, which is told at the end of the book. Her story is told from different view points in order to keep the mysteriousness of her character until the end. The main narrators are Claudia, Freida, and pecola. However, towards the end, Pecolas father also begins to tell his story. Claudia and Freida tell pecola's stary as a girl who has been abused and "put outside" by her father. They make her seem like a charcter to be sympathized with. Pecola lives with Freida, Claudia, Mrs. Breedlove, and Mr. Breedlove in the beginning of the book. They take her in because she has been "put outside" by her father. Pecola is described as the ugliest girl in the book .Pecola also believes she is ugly, mainly because she has brown eyes. She feels that if she had blue eyes, like many of the white girls, she would become pretty and would be able to "unsee" the horrible things she has witnessed. Her full story is told towards the end of the book, and how she was raped by her father. She begins to become somewhat psychotic with her obsession of wanting blue eyes and thinking she is extremely ugly. In an attempt to change her eyes form brown to blue, she seeks a out a "healer" of sorts. His name is Elihue Whitcomb. She consults him and asks if he can turn her eyes to blue. He is overcome with negative emotion because he cannot physically change her eyes. However, he makes her believe he can by telling her to feed the dog and if something happens, her eyes will become blue. When she feeds the dog, the dog proceeds to foam at the mouth and die. This si because Elihue poisoned the meat in a previous plot to kill the dog. Pecola now believes she has blue eyes, which allows her to begin living in a fantasy world. The fact that Pecola went from being an inncoent girl simply wanting blue eyey to a somewhat psychotic girl living in a dream world makes her a dynamic character. She is also round because she has a complex character. The reader's opinion is also changed from beginning to end.
Cholly:
Cholly is Pecola's dad and antagonist. He is not really introduced until the middle of the book. He has many internal conflicts, which makes the reader sympathize with him for a period of time. However, it is then told that he raped his won daughter, Pecola, and got her pregnant. When Cholly's family history is told from his perespective, the reader begins to feel somewhat sympathetic for him. He was abandoned by his father and mother in a garbage pile as a baby which makes us feel sympathetic. He is known as a violent alcoholic who verbally and physically abuses his family. He causes Pecola to become so obsessed with wanting blue eyes. He is the reason for Pecola's turn in personality. His character is definitely a static round character. Although the reader's opinion of Cholly might change, his actual personality and character traits does not. He is a violent alcoholic, and that never changes. However, he is a round character and very complex.
